Clayton County is in the northeast corner of Iowa. It is named for John M Clayton, a United States Senator from Delaware.
The seat is Elkander, while the largest city is Guttenberg. The Mississippi River makes up one border of this county.
Main highways through the county include US-18, US-51, IA-3, IA-13, IA-56 and IA-76.
It is bordered by Allamakee, Dubuque, Delaware, Buchanan, Fayette and Winneshiek Counties in Iowa, as well as Crawford and Grant Counties in Wisconsin.
